A team of officials from Sikkimâs East District Administration and the NHPC has found that 16 houses downstream of the Teesta Stage-V hydel project in Jang village in Lower Rakdong Tintek are at high risk.
Project, built at a cost of Rs 1,118 crore, will harness water flow from Rangpo, Rongli rivers Gati Infrastructure Private Limited (GIPL), a Hyderabad-based company focused on generating non-carbon power, has commissioned a 110-Mw hydro-electric power project in the northeastern state of Sikkim.

Gangtok: At least 12 labourers were killed when a dam being constructed by a private firm collapsed near Rongli in East Sikkim district, police said on Friday. The Rang Po dam collapsed at about 9.00pm last night and so far 10 bodies have been recovered, but the toll could mount as it was still not clear how many labourers were at work at the site, Superintendent of Police M S Tuli said.

ANAND OBEROI GANGTOK The pug marks of a Royal Bengal Tiger have been found in the snow at an altitude of 10,000 feet in the Himalayas near Jelepla, in eastern Sikkim, after nearly 18 years, officials said.
The high biological diversity and rich genetic forest resources of the state of Sikkim are to be conserved due to their sensitiveness to environmental degradation through continued human interference. The conservation of bioprospecting zones in natural forests as well as in protected areas is considered important for up keeping genetic resources and their germplasm.
