The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) has said that it does not intend to purchase solar power from private, small-scale generators in the City, on the ground that it is not cost effective. The State-owned company has virtually shut its doors on many private generators, including several entrepreneurs using solar photovoltaic panels to generate electricity, hoping to sell it to Bescom.
The Karnataka High Court on Monday directed the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike to file a status report on garbage generated in each ward in the City, and form ward committees at the earliest. Hearing a batch of petitions filed by Kavitha Shankar, G R Mohan and Environment Support Group (ESG), the Division Bench comprising Justices N Kumar and B V Nagarathna directed the Palike to complete the process of appointment of members to the ward committees within 15 days.
The supply of contaminated water to residents of Srinivagilu Tank Bed Layout in Koramangala for the last few months has left many people reeling under the effects of water-borne diseases such as typhoid, cholera and gastroenteritis. Money for improving quality of drinking water in rural areas The governments of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and some other states have drawn the ire of the Centre for failing to report the utilisation of funds provided to them for improving quality of drinking water in rural areas in the current financial year. Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are also among the States, which could spend less than 50 per cent of the support fund the Centre provided to them under the National Rural Drinking Water Programme, prompting the latter to threaten to put on hold the release of the second installment of the total annual allocation made for them.
The Urban Development and Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) which are struggling to supply quality drinking water to its consumers, is now waking up to the fact that the two of the crucial legislations concerning ground water has not been implemented. Urban Development and BWSSB Minister S Suresh Kumar on Friday wrote to Chief Secretary S V Ranganath asking him to instruct the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj department to implement the two crucial Ground Water Acts.
Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Thursday reiterated that no agricultural land will be acquired for industrial development in the State. “Only land unsuitable for agriculture will be taken up," he said at the foundation stone laying ceremony of a new building of the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) in Gandhinagar here. “Sometimes, while in the process of achieving good results one gets abused and it was the case with the KIADB,” Shettar said. He promised that he would look into the matter of pensions of those working with the KIADB, and directed the Minister for Large and Medium Industries Murugesh R Nirani to send the required files to his office.
Free milk project for children held up for want of funds, says KMF chief Milk unions in the State cumulatively owe as much as Rs 117 crore to dairy farmers, Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) chairperson G Somashekhara Reddy has said. Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Reddy said the KMF has borrowed Rs 160 crore from HDFC Bank at 12 per cent interest to pay off the dues to dairy farmers.
Study states that 20,000 MW can be generated by using a minimum 5 pc of wind-rich land Wastelands in Karnataka can generate at least 50,000 MW of wind energy with turbines fitted at a height of 80 metres, according to a study by the Center for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP). The study report released on Wednesday also identified Haveri, Chikkaballapur, Hassan, Bijapur and Kolar districts, apart from Bellary, Chamarajnagar and Chitradurga, for having the potential for generation of wind energy.
Centre, doctors have recommended ban on the cancer-causing product While 14 states in the country have banned manufacture and sale of gutka in accordance with the Centre’s directions, Karnataka is dragging its feet on the issue. The government is yet to take a decision in this regard, despite doctors’ associations and Petitions Committee of the State Legislature recommending immediate ban on gutka.
