  • Erosion driving people to other States

    The living condition of the people of Paschim Ratiadaha part-II village under Bisondoi gaon panchayat in the far western part of the Indo-Bangladesh border in Golokganj LAC of Dhuburi district are in a deplorable state as the villagers are yet to see the development even after six decades of India's Independence. The heavy-erosion of the river Gangadhar has made more than 300 families of Ratiadaaha part-II village homeless and has devastated their cultivable lands. As a result, the homeless families have to take shelter on roads and dykes.

  • 49% of M'laya below poverty line

    As high as 49 per cent of Meghalaya's population lives in the Below Poverty Line (BPL) margin while the East Garo Hills district has topped the BPL list in the state with 55.94 per cent families living in abject poverty. Official sources said here today that in the Jaintia Hills district, the number of such families registered was the least with only 33.51 per cent living below the poverty line. Similarly, the Ri-Bhoi district recorded 49.94 per cent of such families with altogether 32,590 households in the BPL list.

  • Several people hit by gastroenteritis in Lohit

    Over 200 people have been attacked by gastroenteritis in several villages under Namsai sub-division of Lohit district in Arunachal Pradesh over the past few days. Official sources said here today that no deaths were reported from any of the affected villages so far. Many villages, including Philobari, Silatoo, Lekang and Khowji, had been hit by the disease. Local medical officers visited the affected areas and treated about 200 patients. However, proper treatment could not be provided, following the lack of adequate medicines.

  • Solar lights to fight jumbo menace in 6 villages

    The Forest Department will provide solar lights for electrification of six remote villages in the district. A meeting was held today between the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner and Forest officials to discuss the Centre-sponsored project. Preliminary details regarding the implementation of the project were discussed in the meeting. The use of solar lights may be effective in tackling the elephant menace in these interior villages. Though it has not been finalized yet, there are plans to include Hatisal and Dainigaon in Neamati area and a Majuli village under the project.

  • Water Resources Day

    The 23rd Water Resources Day on the focal theme "Integrated Water Resources Development and Management' was organized today in a befitting manner by the Assam State Centre of the Institute of Engineers (India) in its Panbazar premises in collaboration with a host of State and Central Government Organizations. Inaugurating the celebration, the Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi appealed to the engineers and technocrats to take up immediate measures to harness the vast water resources in the region . Gogoi also released the souvenir, published to commemorate the event.

  • Drinking water and sanitary facilities to all schools by 2009: Rihan Daimary

    Drinking water and sanitary facilities will be ensured to all schools as well as Aganwadi centres by 2009 in Asom. This was announced by the PHE Minister Rihan Daimary in a meeting organized by Udalguri district administration to mark the completion of two years by the present government in office. Udalguri is proposed to be developed into a full fledged district in another three years.

  • State Govt to enhance thermal power generation capacity

    The State Government has decided to enhance its thermal power generation capacity to avoid the power crisis in the lean period faced by the State almost every year. Dispur feels that more thermal power is required for maintaining the "uniformity in power supply' in the State throughout the year.

  • NE States receive Rs 3000 cr for project elephant

    The Ministry of Environment and Forest has released about Rs 3000 crore to the Northeastern States during the past four financial years under the "Project Elephant'. Official sources said here today altogether 17 States, including six NE States, received the fund under the project where elephants exist in the wild. Tripura's share was Rs 36 lakh.

  • Leopard cubs rescued

    Workers of the Lohporya Tea Estate here caught three Leopard cubs today. Later they were handed over to the Forest Department which released them at a safer spot. Assistant Conservator of Forests Gunin Saikia said in view of the increased man-leopard conflict in which many leopards had been killed in the district in the last few years, the Forest Department was considering relocating the three cubs to another place. But since the cubs were too small to be separated from their mother, they were released nearby.

  • NREGA implementation demanded

    About one thousand people of Bokakhat subdivision led by Golaghat district Krisak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) has recently submitted a memorandum to the SDO (c) Bokakhat demanding the implementation of NREGA scheme in Bokakhat subdivision immediately as the Government had announced its implementation from the month of April 2008. The Samiti demanded job cards with its full guarantee period.
