  • Gangtok selected for mega tourism projects

    The Union Tourism Ministry has selected Gangtok among 16 cities to be developed under the Ministry's latest scheme of mega tourism projects for destination and circuit development in the country. Sikkim Tourism department officials said here today that the state capital was given the distinction of being the only city in the Northeastern region owing to its excellent performance in the tourism sector so far.

  • 3 poachers held, ivories seized

    Three poachers and wildlife traders were arrested and five ivory pieces recovered from them in Karbi Anglong district today as the State scrambled to save its prized and highly-endangered one-horned rhinos from poachers. Police said the poachers, involved in poaching as well as illegal wildlife trade, were nabbed from a hotel at Diphu. They have been identified as Khamkhan Soum and Gopu Paite, both from Karbi Anglong, and Nur Islam, from Nagaon district. Five ivory pieces were recovered from them, but it was yet to be weighed, police said.

  • Play enacted to spread awareness on bird flu in Manipur

    Theatre artistes are adding to the State's efforts to create mass awareness for the prevention of bird flu in Manipur. Artistes of the Courtyard Theatre staged Aruba Echel (Clear Stream) at Iboyaima Shuman Leela Shanglen Place compound here to send a message across that poultry farming on scientific lines is safe. The play depicts that thousands of unemployed youths could take up poultry farming, cattle farming and piggery and makes a decent living.

  • Culling ends in Kokrajhar

    The culling operation in Kokrajhar district has been completed today, the Asom Animal Husbandry and Veterinary sources said. It will take, however, one or two days more to complete the task in Dhubri district due to adverse weather condition yesterday, sources added.

  • Jumbos kill one near Dergaon; leopard killed in Teok

    Three wild elephants, which were tailing a herd towards Kaziranga National Park, trampled to death one Baap Hazarika (70) and injured two others at Sial Chapori near Dergaon last night. The body of the deceased man was recovered this morning. Hazarika is the fifth victim in jumbo attacks which took place in the riverine areas along the Brahmaputra river this year. Meanwhile, the marauding jumbo herd, which had been driven away towards the national park, destroyed the Mohpora forest camp under Agaratoli range of KNP. There are no reports of any casualty.

  • Anomalies detected in IAY house construction

    Allegations of corruption have been raised against the people involved in the construction of houses under the Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) in Goreswar Development Block in Baksa district. Local villagers informed The Sentinel that most of the IAY houses under the block are awaiting completion even after a span of two years. Based on public complaints, this correspondent visited the interior areas of Goreswar recently, to take a look into the alleged anomalies and the cases of corruption. It was indeed found that a large number of houses are lying incomplete.

  • Five poachers' arrested

    Five persons have been arrested by the police near the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) in connection with their alleged involvement in rhino poaching. The arrested persons have been identified as Manir Khan (Jakhalabandha), Maman Ahmed (Mathoni TE), Nagina Majhi (Hatikhuli TE), Dhiren Ingti and Biren Ingti (Inglapar). Meanwhile, 100 armed Home Guard personnel and six forest officials have been deployed in the KNP to check poaching, sources said.

  • Save the Endangered Rhino

    Kaziranga National Park (KNP) is globally known as the home of the one-horned rhinoceros, though it also shelters and attracts a wide variety of exotic birds from all over the world, apart from being the habitat of the wild buffalo, the great Indian swamp deer and other varieties of wildlife forms. KNP is equally famous for medicinal plants, herbs and other exotic flora. But it has earned the status of a national park because of the one-horned rhino, and it is primarily the rhino which attracts visitors.

  • No bird flu in Tinsukia, says Veterinary Department

    Reports of death of more than 200 chicken at Balijan village under Panitola PS in Tinsukia district has created a fear psychosis here. The officials of the District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department have almost ruled out the spread of bird flu in the district and stated that there is no need for the poultry owners to panic.
