KOHIMA: A State level workshop on preparedness for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), jointly organized by TERI New Delhi and State’s department of Forest, was held in the State capital on Wednesday. The workshop was organized with the objective to create financial value for carbon stored in forests, reduce emissions from forested lands and induce investment for sustainable development. Nagaland principal chief conservator of Forests, Dr CL Goel, in his address informed that REDD+ goes beyond deforestation and forest degradation and includes conservation, sustainable management of forest and enhancement of forest carbon stocks. The PCCF said REDD Plus and sustainable forest management can prove to be important tools through which the State of Nagaland can reap benefits of the co-benefits of forests.
Imphal: A citizens’ group on Thursday opposed the formation of an India-Bangladesh joint sub-group on Manipur’s Tipaimukh power project. The mega-power project, one of the largest in Northeastern India, is vital for meeting the increasing electricity demand in the region, but has been opposed by environmental groups and opposition parties in Bangladesh. “Any decision on Tipaimukh dam construction cannot be bilaterally decided only by India and Bangladesh as the land, rivers, forests and all resources in Manipur belong to the indigenous people of our state.

GUWAHATI: A formal meeting between the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) and the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS) and the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) on the controversial 2,000MW Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Power Project was held here today for the first time. An eleven-member team of the KMSS and the AJYCP met the Ministry of Power’s Joint Secretary cum NHPC CMD G Sai Prasad at a city hotel and held a threadbare discussion on the Lower Subansiri Project for about one and a half hours. Both KMSS and AJYCP also submitted a memorandum to Prasad in this regard.

Itanagar: The National Bamboo Mission (NBM) has assured to provide fund to the Arunachal Pradesh Bamboo Resource and Development Agency (APBRDA) to boost the bamboo plantation of the State. NBM deputy director general Kameshwar Ojha made this assurance when APBRDA vice chairman Yora Tagung called on him at New Delhi yesterday, official sources said here today.
