  • Rice farmers battle for their rights

    RICE farmers of Koira upazila in Khulna district are now engaged in a battle for establishing their rights. Hundreds of poor farmers have demanded immediate stoppage of leasing of government canals and water bodies to rich farmers for shrimp culture.

  • Proposal to start projects to meet city housing needs

    Nagar Unnayan Committee (NUC) of the housing and public works ministry at a seminar yesterday proposed to start housing projects in the city to meet the housing needs especially for the poor, low income and middle income groups in a planned manner. Prof Nazrul Islam of the NUC presented a study paper titled 'A proposal for a housing development programme in Dhaka city' along with architect Salma A Shafi at the seminar at the auditorium of the Department of Public Works with its Secretary ASM Rashidul Hai in the chair.

  • HC issues rule on govt

    The High Court (HC) yesterday issued a rule upon the government to explain within four weeks as to why it should not be directed to take necessary steps to ensure the availability of actual share of the Ganges water at Farakka point as per the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty between Bangladesh and India.

  • Deal to broadcast information on disaster alert, management

The officials of the organisation said this at a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity auditorium in the city yesterday.

  • Call to introduce food rationing for RMG workers

    Leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Workers' Trade Union Centre yesterday demanded budgetary allocation to introduce food rationing for 2.5 million workers in the sector. In a statement the Centre leaders said the government and the factory owners should create a joint fund to begin the factory-based rationing of food. Faced with soaring prices of daily commodities, they said the low-paid workers are struggling to meet their daily needs. The workers, mostly female, are enormously contributing to the national economy but their lives are at stake, they added.

  • HC order on writ petition today

    The High Court will deliver today its order on a writ petition seeking necessary steps to ensure the availability of due share of Ganges water at Farakka point as per the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty between Bangladesh and India. An HC bench of Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana and Justice Rezaul Haque concluded the hearing yesterday and fixed the date for its order on the petition. Advocate Tajul Islam, counsel for the petitioners, yesterday submitted that Bangladesh has not been getting actual share of Ganges water as per the treaty.

  • Heavy rain paralyses life in Ctg

    Life became paralysed in Chittagong yesterday as major parts of the port city were submerged in knee-deep water following heavy rains throughout the day. Besides, two walls collapsed at Lalkhan Bazar and Surson Road in the morning due to the downpour, but none was hurt. According to the Met Office at Patenga, over 202 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in last 24 hours till 3:00pm yesterday.

    The High Court (HC) yesterday began hearing on a writ petition seeking directions to the government to take necessary steps to ensure the availability of due share of Ganges water at Farakka point as per the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty between Bangladesh and India. A bench of Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana and Justice Rezaul Haque will further hear the matter today.

  • Reclaiming and restoring a canal (Editorial )

    The re-opening of the Shubhadya canal in Keraniganj to navigation is a sign of how corrective measures can be taken in certain crucial areas. The canal, in a state of disuse for the last six years because of the depredations of a section of unscrupulous people, will now once again serve the people in the area. It is to be especially noted that the canal will once again benefit traders who operate in the four markets situated along the banks of the canal.
