  • Tiger killed after death of 3 villagers

    Thousands of villagers armed with sticks and machetes beat to death a Royal Bengal tiger Saturday after it had killed three people at Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira, the police said. The critically endangered animal, one of about 600 in Sundarban, the world's largest mangrove forest, was lassoed after entering a village and killing three people Friday night, police official Abdur Razzak said.

    While all other rivers were flowing below their danger level, only the Teesta in the north was flowing 37cm above red mark Saturday morning. But the river swelled by onrush of water from upstream may calm down from Saturday afternoon, said an official of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre. The Teesta fed by rushing water from the upstream after the barrage at Gazaldoba, opened across the border, has flooded some low-lying areas, since Friday night. The situation was likely to get normal from Saturday afternoon, he pointed out.

    The existence of wildlife in the Lawachera reserve forest in Moulvibazar is threatened due to acute crisis of animal feed, according to forest officials. In the last two months, a good many animals came out of the forest and entered the human habitation in search of feed, the forest officials said.     All major rivers and their tributaries marked further rises following continuous moderate to heavy rainfalls and onrush of hilly waters from upper catchments in the greater Rangpur area, officials said on Friday. There is no flood situation so far in Kurigram, Rangpur, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari and Gaibandha where the rivers marked rises but were flowing one metre to two metres below their respective danger marks at all points, Water Development Board officials said.

  • Faridpur town at risk of river erosion

    The Faridpur town is under threat of erosion by the River Padma as the authorities concerned could not complete construction of the river protection dam before the current monsoon. The river is advancing fast, and it is now only 250 metres away from the district town, creating panic among the residences in the town and adjacent areas. In the last few days, several points of the newly built five-kilometre embankment in Vajondanga area under Alibad union of sadar upazila has been eroded by the river, sources at the Water Development Board, Faridpur said.
