Call to protect coastal ring embankments
Speakers at a discussion meeting on Monday called for protecting the coastal ring embankments immediately to ensure safe livelihood of marginal farmers and fishermen in the region. They also demanded immediate repair of the damaged embankments to save the lives of marginal people, saying that most damaged portions of the embankments were hindered mainly by the owners of saline water shrimp enclosures.

Implementation of Karnaphuli water supply project to begin soon
The Chittagong Water Supply and Sewerage Authority is likely to begin implementation of the Tk 962 crore Karnaphuli water supply project within a month. The Chittagong WASA sources said they had sent the project proposal to the purchase committee of the advisory council for approval and it, they believed, would not take more than one month for the process to be completed. The implementation would be initiated immediately after getting the approval, they said.

Prices of diesel, kerosene up in Barisal
The prices of diesel and kerosene have registered a sudden increase in Barisal over the couple of days reportedly due to artificial supply shortage created by a section of traders. Local said diesel and kerosene prices had increased in the city by Tk 7.00 to 10.00 per litre. Oil depot sources said they had supplied kerosene at Tk 7, 842 per barrel and diesel at Tk 7, 762 per barrel to the dealers. The dealers have been directed to sell those at Tk 8,000 per barrel in the wholesale markets.

Speakers at a daylong workshop on Thursday emphasised the need for making the sanitation programme compulsory through out the country for getting relief from various waterborne diseases. At least 80 per cent diseases spread in the country due to lack of proper knowledge about sanitation, they said and urged the authorities concerned to set up sanitary latrines in the rural areas.

Water crisis turns acute in Dakope upazila in Khulna
People in almost all the villages under Dakope upazila in Khulna are suffering acute crisis of drinking water in the current summer. Water of all the tube wells excepting a few in the upazila are not safe for drinking as it is contaminated with arsenic and contains high salinity, local people said. Besides, most of the pond sand filters (PSF) installed by the Department of Public Health Engineering remain inoperative, worsening the situation, they said.

Increase in early variety of paddy farming to eliminate monga
THE government has planned to eliminate monga (near famine situation) through cultivating early variety of paddy in five northern districts by 2010. It has undertaken a plan to cultivate BRRI dhan-33 variety of paddy, developed by the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. in 40,000 hectares of land in the districts this year which, officials concerned said, will create massive job opportunities for the farm labourers during the lean period in the region.
