Rajkot: A nationwide netbased survey on house sparrow has been launched by Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), Mumbai, from April 1. Bird Conservation Society, Gujarat (BCSG), which is one of the 10 partnering institutions in this two-month long survey, has appealed to the people to contribute their data to this important study. BCSG has been working for the promotion of bird watching as a hobby and creating awareness about the importance of conservation.
AHMEDABAD: A fund for public health should be created by levying specific taxes on tobacco, alcohol, petrol and junk foods, believes Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) faculty Dileep Mavalankar. "Taxes should also be levied on any food item that has more than 10% sugar or fat and has high salt content and accrued to the fund for public health," said Mavalankar in response to a proposal of increasing public expenditure on health suggested by High Level Expert Group (HLEG) appointed by National Planning Commission. He was speaking at a function here organized by India Health Progress on Monday.

Gandhinagar: The Reserve Bank of India in its latest report, ‘State Finances: A Study of Budgets of 2011-12’, has identified Gujarat as one of the states where power sector reforms, despite being initiated early, have failed to create the “desired impact” on the financial position of the state power utilities (SPUs). The report says, “Subsidies to SPUs/State Electricity Boards (SEBs) have been rising over the years for Gujarat and Karnataka, which had unbundled utilities”, calling it a “growing area of concern.”
AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat high court has issued suo motu notice to the Anand Agricultural University (AAU) and the Kheda collector for allotment of gauchar land and decision taken to permit green felling on that land. Justice A S Dave sought explanation with regards to the decision of land allotment and removal of green cover, when the court came to know about the development while hearing a quashing petition filed by a talati of Manwada village in Kheda district.
AHMEDABAD: At least nine leopards have been killed by villagers in Saurashtra, Banaskantha and Dang in the last five years. Of these, five were killed in Saurashtra region alone. "Leopards are being killed in the region where people take care of another big cat - the Asiatic lions. Even if a farmer sees his cattle being attacked by a lion, he would not interfere, but if a leopard is involved, they will attack it," said a senior forest officer.

Ahmedabad: Central effluent treatment plants are posing a serious threat to the health of human beings in the state. In hazardous and polluted clusters of Gujarat, the central effluent treatment plants (CETP) are expected to treat industrial sludge to prevent its harmful effect on human and other forms of lives. But, CAG, in its latest report, has found 12 CETPs doing just the opposite. The report is critical of Vapi, Ankleshwar, Nandesari, Kadodara, Sachin and Jetpur.
AHMEDABAD: The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has come down hard on the state government over water pollution. Denting the green image of Gujarat, CAG, in its 2011-12 'civil' report, claimed that there is an "upward trend" in the incidence of water-borne diseases due to heavily polluted water sources. It cited South Gujarat as the worst case, where industrial clusters like Vapi and Ankleshwar and Nandesari near Vadodara have been blamed for violating pollution control norms and discharging untreated waste.
Ahmedabad: Lions and leopards killed at least 10 persons in Junagadh district in the past one year. The state government has revealed that 1,966 attacks on cattle and 60 attacks on humans have been reported in the same period. In a written reply to a question by MLA Dhirsinh Barad, the government said that in the 60 attacks, 10 people died and 52 were injured in the year ending January 31.
