AHMEDABAD: Since Monday, foot soldiers of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) - the link workers of the health department - have been on strike. This development is being viewed as a disaster of sorts.

The health department has asked the municipal corporations to ensure proper follow-up of individual malaria or dengue cases that are reported at its health centres. The department has also wanted that the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) ensure a double check of any mosquito control measures that are undertaken at the ward level. This includes fogging, spraying of insecticides, collecting smears and examinations and follow-up of fever cases that are reported at the urban health centres.
Ahmedabad: Lakes and small waterbodies are the next major concern for Ahmedabad’s mosquito control team. Over 20 water bodies — minor and major — dot the city. And health officials of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) believe that with the rains ebbing, the water bodies are turning into major breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
When contacted, principal secretary, environment and forests, S K Nanda said, “BOD and COD are down from 2,500 to 500 within a year.” BOD and COD tests are a measure of the relative oxygen-depletion effect of a waste contaminant. Both have been widely adopted as a measure of pollution effect. The BOD test measures the oxygen demand of biodegradable pollutants, whereas the COD test measures the oxygen demand of biodegradable pollutants plus the oxygen demand of non-biodegradable oxidizable pollutants.
AHMEDABAD: After the state lost the first round of chemical warfare against mosquitoes, the state health department has been advised to update its armoury. Initially, 'white' powder - chalk mixed with 5% of a substance called malathion - was used to arrest mosquito growth. But it proved to be ineffective.

AHMEDABAD: The high rate of malaria cases in the state is a grim sign of the fight lost out to mosquitoes. Ahmedabad city has recorded 596 malaria cases in the latest weekly disease assessment of the state, the highest and has even overtaken Surat city which has recorded 543. Ahmedabad has the second highest number of falciparum cases in the state. A major reason, according to health practitioners is the relapse of malaria and falciparum cases in patients.
