The Bhopal Municipal Corporation has developed five e-waste collection centers as per the notification of the Union Government. Citizens, traders, residential and non-residential buildings, Government and non-Government organisations can deposit e-waste like fridges, televisions, and computers, mobiles and other electronic waste in these centres.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) in a maiden initiative has invited experts and users to contribute online to the development of its next version of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) capturing mortality and morbidity data. The world’s standard tool provides a picture of the general health of countries and populations and its 11th version is now being developed through an innovative, collaborative process to be released in 2015.

The Supreme Court has refused to re-examine its judgement and expunge the adverse remarks made in it against Medha Patkar-led Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) on the issue of land acquisition for Omkareshwar Dam project in Madhya Pradesh. The apex court dismissed the review petitions filed by the NBA saying that the May 11, 2011 judgement “does not suffer from any mistake” and “no ground is made out” for review of the September 29, 2011 order by which it had declined to expunge the adverse remarks against the NBA in the verdict.

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to allow a controversial US ship to head to Alang in Gujarat for dismantling after an NGO pointed out that the vessel was required to give prior intimation of its decontamination. The ship, Oriental Nicety, was refused permission to enter Indian waters after NGO Research Foundation for Science pointed out that the credentials of the ship were doubtful as the ship itself was a hazardous waste. Earlier called Exxon Valdez, the ship was involved in one of the worst oil spills off Alaska in 1986.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna announced that 50 per cent seats of Van Panchayat Sarpanch will be reserved for women in addition to which, all Van Panchayat members will be insured by the State Government. The Chief Minister made these announcements while speaking at a State level workshop on strengthening and developing Van Panchayats organised by the Forest Department on Monday.

India-born professor Kamal Bawa has donated the entire prize money of one million Norwegian Kronor (about Rs.10 million) from the world's first major international sustainability award to the Indian organisation he founded in 1996. Bawa, distinguished professor of biology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, is the 2012 winner of the Gunnerus Sustainability Award from the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and letters (DKNVS).

The Kerala Government on Wednesday decided to stand firm in its demand for the construction of a new dam in Mullaperiyar on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border where the existing 116-year-old dam was a safety hazard for over 35 lakh Keralites living in the downstream regions. In the context of heated debates in the State sparked off by the report of the Supreme Court’s empowered committee on the issue which termed the existing dam as safe and asked Kerala to reconsider its demand for a new dam, the State Cabinet decided to raise the demand in the Supreme Court strongly.

In a landmark judgement, the Gujarat High Court on Wednesday stayed all activities in the Adani Group’s Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone (MPSEZ) till they get the environment clearance from the Centre. A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice J.B.Pardiwala upheld a petition by people of the villages affected by the 18,000-acre Mundra Port and SEZ in Kutch district and ruled that the all construction and other activities should stop until the clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF).

The Uttarakhand Forest and Rural Development Commissioner has directed the Compensatory Afforestation Management & Planning Authority (CAMPA), Uttarakhand chief executive officer to facilitate plantation of fruit trees in forests to mitigate the human-monkey conflict in the State with CAMPA funds.
