The Supreme Court on Monday directed concerned organizations to shift Asiatic lions from Gujarat to Madhya Pradesh.

Mumbai: The sudden spurt in leopard attacks and increased instances of leopard spotting around Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) are primarily due to the high density of human population and concentration of small prey on the periphery, a year-long study has revealed.

The study, “Mumbaikars for SGNP”, was conducted by the forest department and the Centre for Wildlife Studies, Bangalore and found that there are at least 21 leopards in the national park.

Guwahati: The famed abode on one-horned Indian rhino and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kaziranga National Park in Assam has faced tough challenge to keep rampaging rhino poachers under check basically because of growing number of settlements suspected illegal migrants from Bangladesh around the Park’s core area.

The poachers have been virtually on rampage in the Park since the beginning of this year killing nine precious rhinos so far in the Park, according to official figures.

ITANAGAR: Researchers from Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), near here have claimed to spot three endangered species of vultures at Dying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary in East Siang district, during the course of research studies.

The team of researchers including Dr Daniel Mize, RGU Assistant Professor and Junior Research fellow Rajat Chetry who, underwent research studies here for a week recently, as part of a project to assess vulture population status in Siang region, said that they have come across several species of vulture, out of which three endangered species – Gyps Bengalensis, Gyps Indicus and Gyps Tenuirostris were also recorded.
