Stockholm convention approves non-chemical as well as chemical alternatives

The Conference of Parties to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, meeting in Geneva, approved non-chemical as well as chemical alternatives to endosulfan on Thursday. The non-chemical alternatives were proposed in a significant departure from past practice. The evaluation of non-chemical alternatives, as accepted by the conference, consists of an ecosystem-based approach to pest management as well as technical interventions.

The JPC-SE position statement on asbestos: A long-overdue appeal by epidemiologists to ban asbestos worldwide and end related global environmental injustice

Recently, the Joint Policy Committee (JPC) of the Societies of Epidemiology (SE), a consortium of national and international epidemiologic societies and organizations, released a statement calling for the global ban of asbestos use (JPC-SE 2012). This is not the first such call for an international ban (Collegium Ramazzini 2010), but it is a significant one because it is endorsed by 10 member organizations of the JPC-SE, numerous major epidemiologic and public health associations, and many epidemiologists (JPC-SE 2012).

MicroRNA expression in response to controlled exposure to diesel exhaust: Attenuation by the antioxidant n-acetylcysteine in a randomized crossover study

Health effects associated with diesel exhaust (DE) are thought to be mediated in part by oxidative stress, but the detailed mechanisms therein are largely unknown. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression post­transcriptionally and may respond to exposures such as DE. The researchers profiled peripheral blood cellular miRNAs in mild asthmatic participants exposed to controlled DE with and without antioxidant supplementation.

The governments of India and Canada have taken another step towards full implementation of their bilateral Nuclear Cooperation Agreement (NCA), paving the way for Canadian uranium to reach India. Joe Oliver, federal minister of natural resources, announced yesterday that officials from the two countries had signed an ‘Appropriate Arrangement’ as part of the nuclear agreement. He said so at the headquarters of Canada’s largest uranium producer, Cameco Corporation, in Saskatoon, a city in the province of Saskatchewan.
