New Delhi The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probing the coal scam finally started questioning the accused named in its first information reports (FIRs) on Monday.

The CBI, which had booked five private firms for misrepresenting facts to get coal blocks allocated, grilled Arvind Jayaswal, a director of Nagpur-based AMR Iron and steel and brother mining baron Manoj Jayaswal, for over six hours at its Delhi headquarters on Monday.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today questioned Arvind Jayaswal in the coal block allocation scam. Jayaswal, director of AMR Iron and Steel Pvt Limited, was questioned for allegedly misrepresentating and concealing the fact that the company had already been allotted five blocks when it had applied for the one at Bander in Maharashtra. AMR was required to provide details of its allocations but is said to have concealed this because it would have weakened its claim and also because the company wanted to avoid scrutiny, the CBI believes.

Even as several instances of poaching were reported recently, forest officials on Thursday announced that 65 tigers are inhabiting the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR).

The authorities have arrived at the figure after a tiger monitoring exercise was conducted in the reserve between April 1 and May 31, during which the movements of felines were monitored with the help 94 camera traps.
According to Veerendra Tiwari, TATR’s chief conservator of forests and field director, there were at least 65 tigers in the area, excluding 20 cubs, which is an encouraging sign.

Vinod Khobragade, the village official ( talathi ) of Baranj village in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra who imposed a fine of Rs. 32 crore on the Karnataka Emta Coal Mines Limited (KECML) for alleged illegal mining, was suspended on Monday.

He had also accused the top district officials, including the District Collector, of involvement in the scam. “I have been suspended from service without even a show cause notice. They have suspended me for providing information to the media about the illegal mining scam in Chandrapur,” Mr. Khobragade told The Hindu over phone.
