‘State does not distribute seeds, it only certifies for distribution'

Despite opposition from various quarters, including the agricultural experts and the farmers' organisations, the Gujarat government has refused to impose a total ban on distribution of the Monsanto hybrid maize seed named “Prabal” to the farmers in the State, particularly the tribal agriculturists.

Government officials and functionaries still shudder at the name of Fatehpura taluka in Dahod, a tribal district in Gujarat. In August 2010, India’s first union of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) workers, called the Rashtriya Rojgar Khatri Kamdaronu Kayda Union (RRKKKU), had exposed a massive scam in which Rs 4.18 crores of NREGA money had been siphoned.

Ahmedabad: Tribal districts, which were the torch-bearers for the girl child in Gujarat, boasting of a far healthier number of girls in 0-6 age group, too have shown a decline in the past decade. Sociologists see this trend as alarming as almost all non-tribal districts in Gujarat are already reeling under a skewed sex ratio.
All the tribal districts including Dang, Dahod, Panchmahals, Tapi, Valsad, Narmada and Bharuch, have posted a decline in the child sex ratio in 0-6 age group as per figures of Census 2011.

If the figures given out by the directorate of national vectorborne disease control program (NVBDCP) are to be believed then there were just 14 malaria deaths in the state between January and October this year.

Survey was conducted in randomly selected 23 villages of the Baria forest division. A systematic questionnaire was prepared and based on it question were asked to the tribals. From the survey, 94 species were identified which are being used as folk medicine by the tribal people of Baria division.

Vadodara: As many as 48 people including government officials were booked in a scam of 4.18 crore in National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGA) in Dahod district. Those booked are sarpanches of 20 villages including 11 women sarpanches.

Vadodara: In all, 14 villages of Dahod district were declared cholera-hit on Thursday. Of these, 12 villages belong to Jhalod taluka of the district following which the entire taluka has been declared cholera-threatened.
The decision to issue a notification in this regard was taken after pathological samples tested positive for cholera.
