Mumbai: Most Mumbaikars are unwilling to segregate waste before disposal, according to a survey by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).

Despite the belief that waste segregation at source is the best way to handle solid waste and limit health hazards, 80% of those surveyed were not willing to do it. The survey revealed that generating less waste and improving the recycling capacity are other ways which people felt can help manage waste. A meagre 8% were in favour of a user charge.

Survey Gauges City’s Attitude Towards Issues On Environment

Mumbai: Climate change is no longer an environmentalist’s concern. Erratic weather, change in temperature, depletion of air quality and wind patterns seem to be weighing on Mumbaikars’ minds too.

Hyderabad: A wildlife census was conducted at the Mruguvani National Park, Chilkur, and KBR Park, Hyderabad, early in May.

A team of 40 nature lovers, environmentalists and the members of NGOs, with the help of foresters, conducted the preliminary survey for ‘2013 Summer Annual Wildlife Census.’ The forest department, along with the logistics’ team, covered over 11 km of the Mruguvani National Park. Amar Deep Singh, a participant in the census activity, said, “While carrying out the census, we noticed a number of wild animals in the protected areas, including wild boars, spotted deer, sambhar, indian hare, mongoose, a number of reptiles and various native birds.”

Discarded waste damages ecology of the hills

Long considered by many as the best time of the year to visit this hill station, summer is also viewed as the worst from the environment and pollution point of view. The reason: Many among the tourists coming to ‘enjoy’ the season here leave behind their mark — in one form or the other — on the ecology of the place and their vehicles considerably increase air pollution while many of hawkers from the plains trading in a variety of items including cheap musical instruments, add to the noise pollution.

Over 2,000 Fires Reported, Many Were Deliberate, Says State Forest Department

As many as 2,420 fires spread through 24,000 hectares of the state’s forest area in 2012-13, resulting in an estimated loss of Rs 19 lakh, the latest statistics available with the state forest department showed. In the previous year, they consumed 72,247 hectares. On an average over 42,000 hectares caught fire annually between 2005 and 2013, and the burning, in many cases, was intentional, officials said.

‘The project will submerge patches of the riparian forests’

The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) constituted high-level working group (HLWG) headed by Planning Commission member K. Kasturirangan has said that the government should reassess the impact that the Gundia hydroelectric power project will have on the environment and proceed with it with “extreme caution”. The HLWG submitted its detailed report on the Western Ghats in New Delhi on April 15.
