GUWAHATI: As a special case, the Government of India has sanctioned Rs 161 crore for constructing roads in Assam with 250 and above inhabitants under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).

“In other parts of the country, roads are built under PMGSY in areas with a population of 500 and above. But this norm has been relaxed for Assam. Also, the Centre has sanctioned the construction of 689 km roads in areas with a population of 500 and above. This new project will cost Rs 820 crore and it will include 347 RCC bridges,” said State Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Ajanta Neog while talking to mediapersons in Guwahati on Wednesday.

GUWAHATI: Guwahati Municipal Corporation’s (GMC) ambitious urban social plantation project has hit a roadblock. Due to the ‘indifferent attitude’ of the Guwahati Development Department (GDD), this project has not been able to take off.

A GMC official said, “Guwahati has become a concrete jungle. Due to rapid growth of population and industries, concrete buildings are coming up in the capital city at a fast pace. As a consequence, the city is rapidly losing its green cover. In order to maintain a balance in the ecology and the environment, it is important to plant trees. With this objective, the GMC took up the urban social plantation project.

GUWAHATI: Hitakalpa, a social organization, has expressed resentment at the fact that despite repeated appeals, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has taken no initiative to improve the drainage system in Guwahati.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati today, Hitakalpa president Bani Bikram Sarma said, “The drainage system is unplanned. Every year, because of the poor drainage system Guwahati faces the problem of artificial floods. All the drainage outlets in the city release into the Brahmaputra. In this way, the river is getting polluted.
