Mumbai: Most Mumbaikars are unwilling to segregate waste before disposal, according to a survey by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).

Despite the belief that waste segregation at source is the best way to handle solid waste and limit health hazards, 80% of those surveyed were not willing to do it. The survey revealed that generating less waste and improving the recycling capacity are other ways which people felt can help manage waste. A meagre 8% were in favour of a user charge.

The technology is used for laying “all-weather roads”

From October 4, 2002, when the first ‘plastic road’ was laid on Lenin Street, Kovilpatti in Tuticorin district, the technology of using waste plastic with stone for laying roads has come a long way. Developed by the Department of Chemistry of Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, in 2001 and patented in 2002, the technology has been literally going places. It is now used in several other States, including Kerala, West Bengal and Himachal Pradesh, to lay “all-weather” roads.

Phursungi-Uruli Villagers Warn Of Agitation If Blaze That Broke Out On Sunday Is Not Put Out

A huge fire that broke out at the garbage depot in Phursungi-Uruli on Sunday afternoon was not completely extinguished till late Monday evening, villagers said. They complained of irritation in the eyes and difficulty in breathing as the smoke pervaded the area surrounding both villages. The villagers, who have been protesting for years against the very presence of the garbage dump, have threatened to block garbage trucks from entering the depot if the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) fails to put out the fire by Tuesday evening.

800 Tonnes Created Daily, It Comprises 80% Of Trash Reaching Landfills

New Delhi: Delhi is among the largest producers of plastic waste in the country generating over 800 metric tonnes per day. Around 750 metric tonnes reach landfill sites daily of which roughly 80% are plastic bags and packaging materials. In fact, the capital is among nine cities across India where plastic forms more than 10% of the total waste generated. What makes it more embarrassing for the local government is that plastic bags have been banned in the city since 2009, and not just once but twice.

CM Prithviraj Chavan announced Wednesday formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe financial irregularities and violation of norms by private contractors at the Deonar, Kanjurmarg and Mulund dumping grounds.

"The government needs to evolve a solid waste management policy to effectively tackle the 7,000 metric tonnes of garbage generated in Mumbai. "Preliminary reports have established violation of norms by those awarded 25-year contracts to maintain the dumping grounds," he told the legislative assembly.
