Sudha Nambudiri |KOCHI: There is a reason to cheer on the International Ozone Day. The scientists have recorded a perceptible reduction in the ozone depletion levels in the atmosphere.

It is generally believed that the preventive measures taken by the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) by cutting down the CFCs emission have had its effect on the atmosphere.

Pune, September 16 The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Pune Zilla Parishad Secondary School Section will hold a special programme to celebrate the International Day for the Preservation of Ozone Layer on Wednesday.
An educational tool for creating awareness about Ozone depletion and climate change among students will be launched on the occasion.

The international day for the preservation of the ozone layer is being observed on Tuesday with focus on combating the depletion of the earth

AHMEDABAD: Focusing on the harmful effects of ozone layer depletion, the Gujarat Council of Science City (GCSC), Department of Science & Technology, Government of Gujarat will, on Tuesday, organise various activities as a part of Ozone Awareness Programme to mark the 'International Day for Preservation of the Ozone Layer' on Tuesday.

It is now common knowledge that the Montreal Protocol in its effort to phase out the use of ozone depleting substances, especially CFCs, also alleviated the growing climate problem significantly. Some say the world was given a grace period of 10 years in which to react to the potentially cataclysmic effects of climate change. This publication attempts to provide information and guidance to decision makers in developing countries, both in government and the private sector.

Bhutan, in compliance with the Vienna convention for protection of ozone layer and the Montreal protocol, will have to cut chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) to zero percent by 2010. According to the national ozone officer of the national environment commission (NEC) secretariat, Peldon Tshering, Bhutan had already phased out 85 percent CFC of the baseline.

Inspite of rising fuel prices and air fares, the increasing number of short haul passenger trips has contributed immensely to the increase in per capita carbon emission

Pakistan is making all-out efforts for the protection of Ozone Layer and has, so far, implemented 32 projects for phasing out Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS). Iftikhar Ahmed, Technical Expert, United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and Ozone Cell, Ministry of Environment, said while talking to TheNation here on Thursday. He informed that Pakistan had agreed along with 191 other countries to phase out chemicals responsible for depleting Ozone layer by the year 2010 under an international treaty called Montreal Protocol, which Pakistan had ratified in 1992.

Nuclear war between India and Pakistan would cause more than slaughter and destruction -- it would knock a big hole in the ozone layer, affecting crops, animals and people worldwide, US researchers said on Monday. Fires from burning cities would send 5 million metric tonnes of soot or more into the lowest part of Earth's atmosphere known as the troposphere, and heat from the sun would carry these blackened particles into the stratosphere, the team at the University of Colorado reported.
