The Power Grid Corporation of India, a Government of India enterprise, which is in the business of transmission of power from power projects in north-eastern region, connecting the national grid through their 400 KV, 220 KV, 132 KV lines, is found dealing with extra high tension power in a dangerous manner, ignoring all the provisions of security and safety codes and guidelines of the Government of India.

As many as 16 electricity supply schemes are underway while 91 projects in water supply sector were being implemented in various parts of Balochistan, official sources told APP here Sunday. The government would construct 54 more small dams in different districts aimed at resolving water scarcity problems in the province. In a bid to increase supply in the market, Coal India has decided to sell 15 million tonnes of coal through e-auction this month and reduce the premium to enable consumers to lift more quantity of the fuel. "CIL will offer 15 mt coal through e-auction in June. Our intention is to see that prices go down. CIL has reduced premium to 5% on the notified price from 30% charged last month,' minister of state for coal Santosh Bagrodia said on Wednesday night. CIL chairman P S Bhattacharyya said 11.5 mt coal was offered through e-auction in May and the offtake was 5.3 mt.

Farmers of two Katwa mouzas refused to give land for the proposed 3,000-MW super thermal power station at the home district of industry minister Mr Nirupam Sen today. A group of 12 farmers from the Srikhanda and Debkundu mouzas in Katwa went to the office of the ADM (Land Acquisition), Burdwan, and registered their protest against land acquisition by the state government. The state intends to acquire 1,033 acres of farmland in villages surrounding Srikhanda, Katwa to help set up a thermal power project by the West Bengal Power Development Corporation (WBPDCL). n SNS

Pranbihanga Borpuzari The Delhi government-owned Indraprastha Power Generation Co Ltd (IPGCL) will set up a 2,000 mw coal fired power station in Mara-II Mahan coal block in MP. Centre has allotted Mara-Mahan coal block jointly to Delhi and Haryana governments. However, soon after the allotment IPGCL was in a fix as it was already in a mode to phase out all its coal plants in Delhi and did not need coal for power generation.

They call it black gold and its price is on the rise, true to its name. Relentless buying by energy starved countries, is pushing up the prices of coal in the global markets. More specifically, the price of Indonesian coal has shot up from around $53 a tonne in May 2007 to $121 now, thereby reflecting an increase of a whopping 128% in a year. According to Argus Coalindo Indonesian Coal Index report, the price of Indonesian 6500 KCAL is $121.41 a tonne, while 5800 KCAL is $93.26 and 5000 KCAL is $ 72.86.

The government has been deliberating on measures over oil prices through the last fortnight. Meanwhile, the companies' losses rose from Rs 16.34 a litre to Rs 21.43 on each litre of petrol, Rs 23.47 to Rs 31.58 on diesel, Rs 28.72 to Rs 35.98 on kerosene and Rs 305.90 to Rs 352.90 per 14.2-kg cylinder of cooking gas. Together, the three firms are losing Rs 725 crore daily on fuel sales, up from Rs 580 crore.
