For years more than 400 slum clusters of Ahmedabad have been plagued by problems of water contamination and diseases every summer.

Efforts of the state government to clean Budha Nullah seem to be turning futile as effluents are still being discharged into the water body.

Preliminary study by varsity department points to dip in oxygen level in the Karamana

The mass mortality of fish reported from the stretch of the Karamana, near the Thiruvallam and Pallathukadavu ghats last week, could have been caused by the unusual rise in water temperature, reduction in flow and a surge in the concentration of sewage pollution.
A preliminary study conducted by the Department of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, University of Kerala, says the mass fish kill was due to an abrupt dip in the dissolved oxygen in water. Head of the Department A. Biju Kumar says the rise in temperature and reduction in water flow coincided with the summer.

190 Govt Offices With Illegal Sewage Connections Release Waste Into The River

Surat: River Tapi stinks because of release of untreated sewage water into it by many government and other offices. Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) had found Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), income tax department, government circuit house and police among those responsible for releasing sewage waters directly into Tapi.

The river is now one big sewerage line; its catchment area once fed 1,775 lakes

The Arkavathy River was once the lifeline of the region. But all that is left of it today are just fond memories. The river basin that used to boast of 1,775 lakes along its pathway, now has only a few hundreds surviving.
Even during the rainy season, some of the lakes are not filled with water from the basin. The industries along the river stretch and sand mining activity have practically destroyed the river bed, residents claim.

Since the 1980s, advances in wastewater treatment technology have led to considerably improved surface water quality in the urban areas of many high income countries. However, trace concentrations of organic wastewater-associated contaminants may still pose a key environmental hazard impairing the ecological quality of surface waters. To identify key impact factors, we analyzed the effects of a wide range of anthropogenic and environmental variables on the aquatic macroinvertebrate community.

A recent study taken up by a team of researchers from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Chennai, brought to light the serious threat of extinction the coral reef colonies and mangrove forests in the Palk Bay are facing. At present, only two per cent of the coral reefs survive in the area.

Global warming, siltation, release of untreated raw sewage into the water bodies and overgrowth of algae were stated to be the three important reasons for the possible disappearance of coral colonies and its associated organisms from the Palk Bay area.

China will spend 100 billion yuan ($16 billion) over three years to deal with Beijing's pollution, an official newspaper reported on Friday, as the government tries to defuse mounting public anger

Siruthuli’s study findings to be released today

It is 10 years now since a citizens’ initiative to rejuvenate water bodies began in the city. Eight tanks in the city and another in the periphery were desilted. So were the canals that brought water to these tanks. The efforts proved to be good in 2004 when a good monsoon filled up the tanks. But, 10 years down the line – after Siruthuli’s launch in 2003 – the tanks and canals present a sordid sight: some are bone dry while the others hold more of sewage.

It was restored by Salem Citizens Forum under public initiative

Environmentalists here are waging a grim battle to keep the picturesque Mookaneri Lake alive. The Public Works Department’s (PWD) 39-acre water spread, resurrected in 2010 by Salem Citizens Forum at a cost of Rs. 87 lakh under the public initiative, is now a sweet home to birds and flora of all hues.
The lake has turned into a tourists’ paradise today with forum members planning to carry out further development projects such as park and other basic amenities.
