Joining several other States, Tamil Nadu on Wednesday announced a ban on gutka and pan masala.

The ban on the manufacture, storage and sale of the carcinogenic chewable forms of tobacco led a host of announcements Chief Minister Jayalalithaa made in the Assembly pertaining to the health sector.

The Supreme Court on Friday warned states and Union Territories that they may face contempt action if they failed to file compliance reports on gutkha ban within six weeks.

"We are giving clear warning to the governments. We will initiate suo motu contempt proceedings against them if they fail to file report on compliance of banning gutkha products in their states. Those who do not file report shall do at their own peril," said a Bench led by Justice G S Singhvi.

The Union ministry of health underlined four rules for advertisement boards for tobacco products. The first is that the size of the advertisement board should not exceed 60 centimetres by 40 centimetres.
