Rejecting railway minister Mukul Roy's move to roll back hike in passenger fare, CAG said the way forward for the national transporter is to rationalize both passenger and freight tariffs to tide over the severe financial crunch. The government auditor observed that railways is in the red, and has not been able to meet the escalating cost of operating passenger and other services.

New Delhi: In a fresh twist in the PIL being heard by the Delhi high court on utility of the BRT corridor, another NGO has moved court against scrapping of the project. National Alliance of People’s Movement, an umbrella organization has sought to be heard as a party to the PIL where HC has ordered a review of the utility of the corridor. Arguing against any move to scrap it, the NGO is likely to field rights lawyer Prashant Bhushan to make their case for retaining the corridor, arguing in essence that it serves the needs of the masses that use public transport.

The Kerala Government is planning to raise Rs 1 lakh crore from a multilateral financial institution for funding the high speed rail corridor project. The project will connect Thiruvananthapuram with Udupi in Karnataka, said the Kerala Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy. He was in the city for a roadshow to showcase the forthcoming ‘Emerging Kerala 2012' global investor meet, which would be held from September 12 to 14 in Kochi.

The Transport department on Monday said it will file an FIR against Col B B Sharan, who filed a PIL questioning the viability of the BRT corridor, after he got Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System (DIMTS) officials to demolish kerbstones separating BRT lane from the rest of the road. The kerbstones were removed on Saturday night after Sharan told DIMTS officials that the study team had been permitted to remove barriers if needed.

New Delhi: The second day of the trial run on the bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor saw high drama as kerbstones in the centre of the corridor were found demolished on Sunday morning. These kerbstones, which divided the dedicated bus lane from the rest of the carriageway, were removed by Colonel BB Sharan, a petitioner in the original PIL which had raised questions on the viability of the BRT.

The real grit of the Delhi Traffic Police and other agencies monitoring the experimental run for mixed vehicular usage on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Corridor will be put to test on Monday, the first working day post the commencement of the pilot study. Overwhelmed with the postive response received from the first day of the trial run (from Khanpur T point to Siri Fort), the expert body, Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) conducting the survey feels that there would be no major hassles in traffic flow on Monday, which normally sees an increase of 30 per cent in traffic volume.

The four major commercial hubs of South Delhi will be connected via the Metro, once the Phase III of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is complete (DMRC) in 2016. Officials in the Delhi Metro said Sarojini Nagar and South Extension will have dedicated stations, while the the existing stations at INA Market and Lajpat Nagar will be converted into interchange stations. The upcoming 59-km-long Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar-Shiv Vihar corridor has been specially aligned from Bhikaji Cama Place towards Sarojini Nagar to provide direct connectivity.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's Phase III expansions plans are sure to please many more residents of the city. First it was the ‘heritage corridor' for heritage enthusiasts, now plans to connect four of South Delhi's prominent markets will surely prove a boon for shopaholics. By 2016, four major markets — Sarojini Nagar, INA, South Extension and Lajpat Nagar — will have dedicated underground metro stations connecting them.

A model bus terminal planned in Kalasipalyam

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) will soon introduce a bus with a passenger capacity of 110, Transport minister R Ashoka said on Thursday. The new bus will be 14.5 mt in length as opposed to the existing city buses which are 12 mt in length. The new bus would hit the road within a month and the idea is to provide more space for passengers, Ashoka said.

60 new buses connecting metro stations every 15 minutes

Commuters in the satellite towns of Gurgaon and Faridabad have reason to rejoice with the Haryana Roadways agreeing to introduce feeder buses connecting these towns to major metro railway stations in the Capital. The service has become operational with close to 60 buses plying on routes connecting metro stations such as Badarpur, Tughlakabad, AIIMS, Kashmere Gate and HUDA City Centre every 15 minutes.
