Govt Reworked On Documents After UN Body Rejected Five Of The Six Monuments Last Year

PANJIM: The Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) has directed the Goa government to submit its proposal to declare Mhadei wildlife sanctuary as a ‘tiger reserve’. The demand has come at a time when wildlife enthusiasts~ particularly those working for tiger conservation~are up beat about the sighting of a tiger in the sanctuary, which appears to be a local predator.

Forest Department officials had clicked photographs of the tiger moving in the sanctuary, a fortnight ago. This is for the first time that direct and conclusive evidence has been found by the forest department officials about its presence.

The presence of Indian Bison has been recorded in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kaziranga National Park (KNP) in Assam after over 30 years, much to the cheers of wildlife conservationists and park officials.

KNP director NK Vasu said a huge male Indian Bison was clicked by camera traps installed in the park to monitor the tiger population. The Bison was recorded by camera traps located in the Bagori range of the park.

Guwahati: One more translocated rhino was poached in Manas National Park in western Assam bordering Bhutan Himalayas. Forest officials informed that the poachers cut away the horn of the animal after killing it in Kahitema Beat of Bansbari Range of the Park on Tuesday.

It happened to be fourth translocated rhinos to be poached in Manas Park that is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So far 22 rhinos have been translocated to Manas National Park from other protected areas of Assam as part of the India Rhino Vision 2020 programme.

Abandon plans to build a new dam, says activist

C.P. Roy, former chairman of Mullaperiyar Samara Samithi, has reiterated his demand for the construction of a tunnel from the Mullaperiyar dam.
He also has sought the abandonment of the plan to build a new dam. Mr. Roy’s demands come close on the heels of the State Budget allocating Rs.50 crore for the construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar.
