Mercury climbed further making Thursday hottest day of the city this summer. The maximum temperature was 43.3 degrees Celsius, above Wednesday’s 42.6 degrees Celsius.

Pune: City-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology officially launched its second ‘System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) - Pune’ for Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad on Wednesday. Other facilities such as ‘air quality and weather assessment and data on hitech-digital India’ (AWADHI) — a one stop-shop for metro air quality information was also launched.

In addition to it, an ‘interactive voice response (IVR) service’ was also introduced, where citizens of Pune can get the current and 24-hour advance forecast information on air quality and weather of Pune and Delhi just by dialing a toll free number.

This document consists of rainfall data for 100 years i.e from 1901 to 2011 published by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

India and other South Asian countries are expected to get a ‘normal’ rainfall during forthcoming monsoon months (June-September), which is expected boost food production in the region, a global forum has predicted.

The South Asian Climate Outlook Forum, which met late last week in Kathmandu, in its prediction has stated ‘large-scale summer monsoon rainfall will mostly likely to be within the normal range with a slight tendency towards higher side of the normal range.”

Reliable forecasts of future ‘megadroughts’ would be a boon to farmers and water managers. But results presented last week at the annual assembly of the European Geosciences Union in Vienna suggest that such forecasts are still beyond the reach of current climate models.

Lucknow: Famous Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib had once said, “A a m k h o o b h o a u r m e e t h e h o,” (mango must be in plenty and sweet) after having tasted Lucknow’s famous Dusseheri variety of mango. However, this time the king of fruit is likely to lose on both counts – volume and sweetness.

The blame for this goes to the increasingly unpredictable weather pattern and climate change that have taken a toll on the mango crop in the state this year. Adding to this are the brick kilns that have also played a wicked role as far as the mango crop is concerned. There is uncertainty over the yield and horticulture experts are predicting a sharp fall in production.

The variability of Indian summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR; both at interannual as well as intraseasonal timescales) has a direct impact on various sectors of public interest and economy such as agriculture, water resource, etc. So, the need of real-time extended range forecast system of the ISMR (monthly to seasonal scale) is not overstated. The present study is aimed at developing such a forecast system to predict rainfall (monthly and seasonal mean) one month in advance over 34 meteorological subdivisions of India for climate risk management in agriculture.

New Delhi: A thunderstorm hit the city late on Wednesday, bringing some relief from the steadily climbing mercury.

We investigated the impact of radiosonde data from the ice-free Arctic Ocean obtained by the Japanese R/V Mirai during a cruise in the fall of 2010 on the AFES-LETKF experimental ensemble reanalysis version 2 (ALERA2) data set. The reanalysis used radiosonde data over the ice-free region. Compared with observations, it captured Arctic cyclogenesis along the marginal ice zone, including a tropopause fold, very well.

China's meteorological authority has introduced a new weather warning system for smog which will use readings of PM 2.5, a particle pollutant.
