A wild bear mauled eight people, including two women, to death and injured eight others in a forest in Odisha's Koraput district before being killed by villagers, an official said Sunday.

SHILLONG: The Wildlife Trust of India and Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, New Delhi, have taken strong note of the recent detection of poaching of endangered species of animals in the State and sought a report from the Meghalaya forest officials on the action taken in this regard.

The forest staff had apprehended as many as 25 poachers on April 24 last and seized the body parts of endangered deer among others from Mawkarah village in West Khasi Hills district.

The presence of Indian Bison has been recorded in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kaziranga National Park (KNP) in Assam after over 30 years, much to the cheers of wildlife conservationists and park officials.

KNP director NK Vasu said a huge male Indian Bison was clicked by camera traps installed in the park to monitor the tiger population. The Bison was recorded by camera traps located in the Bagori range of the park.

A committee set up by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to probe the death of five elephants in Orissa's Ganjam district due to a speeding train has recommended that the Railways should restrict the speed of trains passing through identified vulnerable tracks in forests to a maximum 40 km per hour to prevent elephant deaths.

On the intervening night of December 29 and 30 last year, five elephants were mowed down by Coromondel Express, speeding at 110 km/hr near Subalaya in Ganjam district, when the herd was crossing the track. Incidentally, the accident occurred at the spot where the Railways had put up a warning signage of elephants crossing.
