The European Commission agreed to impose punitive import duties on solar panels from China in a move to guard against what it sees as dumping of cheap goods in Europe, prompting a cautious response from Beijing which called for further dialogue. EU commissioners backed EU trade chief Karel De Gucht’s proposal to levy the provisional duties by June 6 and make Chinese solar exports less attractive, two officials said.

New Delhi: The proposed food security law may attract penal action at the World Trade Organization (WTO) for a possible breach of the subsidy cap allowed under these rules, prompting the government to seek an amendment to the norms.

Although a proposal from the G-33, spearheaded by Indonesia, China, Pakistan, Philippines and India, had already been moved in the run-up to the ministerial meeting in Bali in December, the proposed food security legislation has increased the urgency.

US had made similar complaint against India in February

Two months after it was taken to the World Trade Organization by the US government on the renewable energy (RE) sector, the Indian government has done likewise. It has made a complaint to WTO’s dispute settlement body, alleging the US, both at the federal and state levels, is offering subsidy programmes in the sector for local content requirements, making the entry of Indian companies difficult and breaching global trading rules.

India, on Wednesday, conveyed to the U.S. that it had not violated any multilateral trade agreement by issuing compulsory licence for Bayer’s patented anti-cancer drug Nexavar to a local firm so as to make it affordable.
