China

Biotech Sense
China is heeding biotech warnings. It plans to introduce a law to regulate the use of biotechnology in agricultural production. This proposed law is intended to protect people's health and environment. It would ensure regular inspection of biotechnology methods to reduce harm on the ecosystem. The administration is working with several ministries on the proposed law and shall soon be tabled in the parliament for ratification.

Incidentally, Chinese biotech rules have strained its trade relations with the us. China had required genetically modified organism (gmo) product exporters to apply for certificates stating that their goods were harmless to humans, animals and the environment. New orders of the us cargoes of soybeans, 70 per cent of which are bio-engineered, were badly hit by this rule.
