Human rights and poverty eradication: A Talisman for the Commonwealth
THIS much-awaited report highlights the plight of the poor in these countries. The disparity between haves and have-nots have been documented in detail. The statistics are well highlighted. Take for example the painful fact that approximately 40 per cent of the population in India, Lesotho, Gambia, Tanzania, and several countries in Africa earn less than a dollar a day. "That makes the Commonwealth home to over half of the people worldwide who struggle to survive with this paltry income." Of this number, 70 per cent are women. The plight of indigenous people and children living in these countries has also been delved into extensively. The report also takes a bold look at globalisation and its burden on the poor. Boxes in various chapters provide a refreshing peek into vital issues.
