Preventive steps
Till the time researchers come up with an effective vaccine against A (H5N1), prevention is the only way to avoid the deadly virus. Beyond that, early recognition of infection and specific treatment with the drug amantadine before the infection becomes too serious is the only line of defence.
Prevention involves two main strategies. First, all viruses can be neutralised by a healthy immune system. Keeping the immune system in optimum condition is the best way of surviving A (H5N1) infection. Immune systems function best when well supported with the right nutrients. Plenty of fresh food, especially fruit, vegetables, high fibre cereals and protein, provide the immune system with the best nutrition. Overcooking foods should be avoided, especially overboiling of vegetables, because the "trace elements' needed by the immune system are lost. Along with good nutrition, the immune system needs minimal stress. Lack of sleep, overworking and emotional stress have all been shown to damage the immune system.
Overheating or underheating the body also stresses the immune system, so it is important to keep the body temperature stable. This implies wearing plenty of warm clothes in winter, but taking those wrappings off indoors, especially in a heated building. Ventilation is also important. This means opening windows and letting air flow freely. If the virus is circulating, its force will be diluted.
