SOUTH KOREA

Smoking has been banned in Seoul's primary and secondary schools. To ensure that the ban is effectively implemented, teachers and students are being imparted more anti-smoking education by the authorities concerned.

Says You In-jong, superintendent of the Seoul education board, "We plan to declare war on smoking and wage an anti-tobacco campaign throughout to stop teenage smoking, a major social problem. As part of the movement, schools are being instructed to create task forces for developing programmes to discourage smoking.

Surveys indicate that an alarming 12.3 per cent male elementary students and 3.4 per cent female elementary students indulge in smoking.
