Endless row

The Enron project seems to be generating endless controversy. Since April 28, an indefinite satyagraha has been launched against the multinational company by the Enron Virodhi Sangharsha Mancha and the National Alliance for Peoples Movement at Ghuaghar in Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra. In a separate development, the Supreme Court has decided to look into the reasons for the change in the stand on the project, adopted earlier by the Maharashtra government.

The Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena government had initially shot down the project on grounds of environmental degradation and financial impropriety. Later, on second thoughts, the government green signalled the project. Anti-Enron activists consider the SC's decision as the key to a Pandora's box. Activists from Bihar, Bengal, Kerala and the Narmada valley are meanwhile, courting arrest almost with a vengeance, refusing to pay the fine or sign the bond and even choosing to remain in jail for upto seven days.
