Women and forests

according to a study conducted by the Anand-based India Natural Resource Economics and Management Foundation (inrem) on nurseries run by women, lack of adequate training, access to credit and resources and the low buyback rate of the saplings are restricting the role of women in afforestation programmes and participatory forest management.

The study was conducted by Ganesh and Vasudha Pangare, research consultants at inrem, at 43 nurseries across eight states. The study states that nearly all the states were facing a financial crisis, as a result, only the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat have a decentralised people's nursery programme. The researchers recommend that "centralised nurseries be used for training, research and for developing and maintaining quality material of a wide range of species'.
