On November 5, 2006, activists of the Bharat Kisan Union alleged violation of biosafety regulations in a field where trials of Bt rice were being carried out in Rudrapur village of Gorakhpur district, Uttar Pradesh. After an investigation, the sarpanch of the village panchayat registered a police complaint against the seed company Mahyco, the department of biotechnology and the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee. It alleged a violation of the Environment Protection Act, 1986, because the panchayat was not informed. The district's joint director of agriculture also said he was not informed about the trial. The land in question is owned by an absentee landlord based in Hyderabad.
