US states protest anti GHG bill
Governors from eight us states have protested to Congress about a possible legislation, which they claim will limit their efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions. The bill, if passed, would pre-empt California's landmark effort to cut automobile and small truck emissions.
The proposal has the potential to prevent the us Environmental Protection Agency (epa) from allowing California to receive a waiver from federal rules so that more stringent norms can be implemented by the states.
In a joint letter, the governors (from the states of California, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Washington, New York, Arizona, Oregon, and New Mexico) have urged Congress to pursue "legislation that instead enhances and complements the efforts already under way' in their states. Eleven states have followed California's emission-cutting norms, while six are considering it. If epa grants California's waiver, the other states will be free to follow the suit.
