Lawsuit against Canada for noncompliance of Kyoto protocol

An environmental group has launched a lawsuit against the government of Canada for failing to take steps to implement requirements of the Kyoto Protocol.

The Canada chapter of the international group, Friends of the Earth, alleges that the government has failed to comply with the Kyoto Protocol Implementation Act.

The parliament passed the act in June 2007 to ensure that the government takes timely and effective action to meet its obligations under the Kyoto Protocol. Among other requirements, the act also mandated the government to publish draft regulations by October 20. Failure to do so was the provocation for the legal action.

This is the second time that the group has demanded a judicial review of the nation's commitment to the Kyoto Protocol.

Earlier in September this year, the environmental group took the government to court for failing to prepare a climate change plan according to the requirements of the act.
