Building green citizens
HIGHBROW colleges can seek to catalyse changes in the communities they are rooted in. The Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) is a national voluntary membership organisation based at Ontario in Canada. The accc acts as an interface between colleges and institutes to the government and industry.
The accc is looking for worldwide membership for its environmental citizenship programme. This programme seeks to train responsible citizens, who can do a lot for the cause of environmental development, specifically targeting college students. The accc's green anthem enjoins supportive colleges to develop work on study projects related to the needs of the community.
Says Val Schaefer, a teacher at Douglas College, Ontario, "We are offering seminars in Environmental Citizenship entitled "Protecting the Environment -- What one person can do". All these efforts have made the Canadian colleges which are willing to share their skills develop competence in national human resource development.
