In 2000-2001, the tobacco sector generated a revenue of Rs 8,200 crore as taxes. Foreign exchange earning by the sector during the period was Rs 900 crore (or four per cent of India's total agricultural export earning). Therefore, total revenue generated by the sector was 9,100 crore
This is peanuts compared to the cost incurred due to tobacco-related diseases
