EL SALVADOR
Following a severe drought, at least 50,000 people in El Salvador may die of starvation in the next six months, report officials of the World Food Programme (wfp). "Some 10,000 families in El Salvador were unable to harvest any crops this year due to the drought that has affected at least 1.5 million people across Central America,' said Guy Gauvreau, a wfp delegate. To make matters worse, the drought has exacerbated poverty in the country, whose 50 per cent population survives in extremely harsh economic conditions.
