Taiwan earthquake

A devastating earthquake struck Taiwan on September 21, killing more than 1,700 people. Most of the casualties were in the central counties of Taichung and Nantou, said an official with the interior ministry.

The earthquake measured 7.3 on the Richter scale, according to Taiwanese officials. However, the French National Earthquake Surveillance Network said it measured 8.1. The Seismology Centre in Taiwan said that the epicentre of the earthquake was 12.5 km west of the scenic Sun Moon Lake in central Nantou country. Seismologists had warned earlier this year that the densely populated island could be hit by earthquakes.
