Cerebral clowning

  • 30/04/1994

In keeping with its determinedly frothy approach to TV programming, Aavishkar, Zee TV's weekly science programme (Monday evenings at 5 pm) has at least as much clowning around as cerebral illumination. This is science made fun for yuppies and puppies. The competing panels always span three generations of both sexes who have to produce an amateur invention with given components, answer questions and guess at the scientific principles behind certain phenomena.

The objective is to reiterate elementary scientific principles and entertain at the same time, and the setting is appropriate: an exaggerated laboratory look with a scientist who affects eccentricity while conducting the proceedings. And as with most TV shows these days, there are prizes to be won for the participants. Popular science is welcome, but this is one which needs to acquire a little more depth in its contents.
