Waste not, want not
Storage:
The generator of hazardous wastes is allowed to store a maximum of 10,000 kg or a truck load, whichever is less, of the hazardous wastes on site for a maximum of 90 days.
The waste should be stored only in closed, specified containers in designated protected areas.
The storage facilities and containment systems in hazardous waste storage areas should be inspected.
Transportation:
The authorities should ensure that a copy of the manifest is sent to them as soon as the waste is shipped for treatment and disposal.
The authorised transporters of hazardous waste should be registered.
The drivers of the vehicles transporting waste should be trained to deal with emergency situations.
Treatment and disposal:
The authorities should receive a copy of the manifest when the hazardous waste is received for treatment. The proposed treatment and disposal method should be indicated.
The waste should be disposed of only in notified disposal facilities.
Waste management facilities should be set up only on approved sites.
Licences should be issued to the owners and operators of waste management facilities only after their technical, financial and managerial capabilities have been reviewed.
The facilities should be inspected during construction, operations and at the time of the closure of the landfill facility.
Standards should be established for stack emissions from incinerators.
Stack emissions, effluent and groundwater quality should be monitored regularly.
The contingency plan of the waste management facility should be reviewed thoroughly before approval.
The records of such facilities should be checked periodically.
