Chile

Big No To Chips
Greens are protesting against the use of native tree species to make wood chips. Recently, Greenpeace activists chained themselves to a Japanese ship docked in Chile to express their resentment.

The protesters aimed to prevent the ship from loading 42,000 cubic metres of wood chips made from prized tree species found in temperate, old-growth rainforests in southern Chile.

The environmentalists charged Chilean timber firms of destructive harvesting of native forests that goes unpunished by the government. It is inconceivable that the government allows rich native forest to be destroyed, degraded and threatened when its biological and ecological importance has been recognised worldwide.
