the Indian government has procured a hefty loan of us $203.9 (Rs 741.5 crore approximately) from the World Bank to tackle malaria by the year 2002. Under the programme, National Malaria Eradication Programme ( nmep ) of the ministry of health and family welfare will manage the funds and work to improve existing infrastructure and develop an institutional mechanism for implementing alternative methods of malaria control.

The project, titled Enhanced Malaria Control Project , was discussed by an array of government officials and health experts at a workshop from 15 to 17 September in New Delhi. However, the details of the implementation of the project were not clearly marked out and it will be some time before nmep finds any practical solutions to implementing the programme.

The project aims to cover 1045 primary health care centres in 100 districts of seven states.
