Sorting e waste

The European parliament has put forth the second reading of the draft European directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (weee) demanding a compulsory target of six kilogrammes of electronic-scrap per person per year from private households by 2005. Parliament has also announced its determination to ban consumers from throwing electronic-scrap in the bin with unsorted waste. They plan to make individual producers finance the recycling or safe disposal of electronic-scrap.

Members of European Parliament are backing the proposed ban on binning electronic-waste with inspection and monitoring facilities. The menace of electro-scrap is growing at the rate of six million tonnes and is the fastest growing waste stream in the EU.
