China, the master recycler?

  • 30/10/2004

China, the master recycler? One wonders: does the uk really believe the Chinese are great recyclers, or is it plain irresponsible? The uk exports more than a third of its waste paper and plastic to China for recycling: government puts the annual figure at 200,000 tonnes of plastic rubbish and 500,000 tonnes of paper and cardboard. Environmentalists suspect this is done without assessing the environmental cost involved. They fear the waste landing up in China is not handled safely and could cause large-scale pollution.
