Mumbai suburbs gets a landfill site for hazardous waste
Kanjurmarg waste landfill site, about 35 km south of Mumbai, is Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai's (mcgm's) latest possession. A serpentine queue of muck-filled trucks through a kachcha road lined with mangroves along the eastern highway that connects Mumbai with Thane is the easiest way to identify the dumping site. The 141-hectare dumping yard, originally a salt-pan land, was handed over to mcgm in October 2005 to be developed as a landfill for the city's over 8,000 tonnes waste per day.
However, it is not just about waste. It is about toxic waste. The source of this toxic waste is the Mithi river
