Swimming in sewage

  • 29/04/1995

Poor sewage treatment has turned many of Britain's beaches into giant public toilets. Every day, about 300 gallons of untreated and semi-treated sewage is pumped into the sea. The recently published Good Beaches Guide 1995 has approved only 100 beaches as clean and healthy. The guide was started by Tony and Daphne Wakefield, whose daughter died from polio she contracted after swimming in water contaminated by sewage.
