An evolving battle

  • 14/10/1995

The titans of evolutionary biology are locked in a battle of books. With the progress made in genetic science, scientists are questioning Darwin's theory of natural selection. Richard Dawkins's River Out of Eden, Daniel C Dennett's Darwin's Dangerous idea, and ''Niles Eldredge's Reinventing Darwin, are reflections on Darwin's theory in todays scientific context. Dawkins and Dennett promote macro-evolution, which sees natural selection as a necessary but not a sufficient explanation of evolutionary change. Eldredge, on the other hand, contrasts this with the concept of microevolution. What is most interesting is that all 3 books have been written for the layperson, indicating a spurt of popular interest in what was once an esoteric subject.
