Parallel problems

The supercomputers of today face a problem. The processors, which are all connected in parallel, have to wait for data from the memory-, this waiting time has become the limiting factor in a supercomputer's speed. The Tera Computer Co in Seattle, US, is trying out a new idea to ensure that the processors always have some task to do when they are waiting for data from other processors. The strategy, together with a scheme to interconnect the multiple memo ries and processors, would increase the speeds of the parallel machines and make them more efficient (Science, Vol 269, September 8,1995).
